Update 3.12.08: In Fedora Core 10 Live system I get more than 1300FPS in glxgears.
Update 23.11.08: I found a work-around for the suspend to RAM problem. It now works but causes minor problems with CPU frequency scaling. Here is my report.
Update 21.11.08: Very poor graphics performance in Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex 8.10. It seems there are still problems with the graphic driver xserver-xorg-video-intel. Glxgears performs 1300FPS in Hardy Heron and only 400FPS in Intrepid Ibex. Youtube videos in full screen are not fluent, in Windows they are perfectly fine.
On October 21st 2008 I got my brand new Dell Latitude E6400 Notebook. Main aspect for me was full Linux support. If possible right out-of-the-box. I am continuously adding my new findings to this report, so stay tuned.
As distribution I use Ubuntu Linux. As the machine uses the newest Intel Centrino 2 technology, I have to use Linux Kernel 2.6.27, that means Ubuntu 8.10.
After downloading Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Release Candidate I put it on a USB stick using usb-creator. I could boot from the stick as from a CD.
Can be downloaded for Windows here: www.hdtune.com

In Hardy the same system performs 1300FPS. It seems there are still issues with the Intel driver or Xorg.

As comparison, in Fedora Core 10 Live I get above 1300FPS.
It can only be used with Compiz turned off. Otherwise display is distorted heavily. Without Compiz some letters of town names are missing.
Supertux at full resolution gives exactly 68 FPS most of the time. This seems to be an upper limit.
Starting parameters: supertux2 -g 1440x900 -a 16:10 --show-fps

Touchpad?
Have you had problems with the touchpad? On my e6400 running ubuntu 8.10 it has been very problematic.
See for example http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1026820
Touchpad
Yes, using touchpad and trackpoint at the same time (can happen by accident) is very problematic. The mouse pointer seems to jump around randomly.
Video performance
Any solutions/workarounds for the poor video performance, can we roll back to an older driver?
64bit
Are you running on 32 or 64bit version of ubuntu 8.10? Some people reported difficulties with 4GB RAM in 32bit...
Thanks
Brian
Memory
I am running 32bit. And you are right, I think not all my memory is detected:
But as this is still 7 times more RAM I ever had I am still very satisfied ;-)
sd card reader work
sd card reader work perfectly
ubuntu 8.10 final version works very well.
i have bought dell latitude e5500 just 1 week. yesterday i downloaded the ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex final version and installed on this new machine. Every thing works out of box, and Suspend to RAM also works with the function key Fn + F1 so great, that i didn't expected. It's really a big surprise! It is so easy, even much easier than the Windows installation on latitude e5500, then i did not need to install any extra driver for the special components, e.g. alps touchpad was automatically configured scrolling function with the live test. It's fantastic!!!! so i think that the final version of Intrepid Ibex should work with all latitude e-series laptops without any problem, and dell needn't to release some special dell version for this e-series any more.
Suspend
Suspend worked totally fine here as well. But after around 20 or more suspends it stopped working. I even freshly installed the release candidate but still it freezes. Maybe I try some more times...
suspend freezes after i tested hibernate
yes, i got the same phenomenon. first worked SUSPEND out of the box without any problem, until some time later i tried the HIBERNATE function then SUSPEND and HIBERNATE both friezed the laptop.
Suspend
Yes, I just tried to suspend two more times, both failed. Then I copied the final of 8.10 to an USB stick using usb-creator. Booting from this live system allowed me to suspend all 3 times I tried it without problems.
