Dell Latitude E6400 with Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex 8.10 - English

This is the English version. If you prefere German, please follow this link.

Update 9.1.09: Suspend to RAM has been fixed.

Update 3.12.08: In Fedora Core 10 Live system I get more than 1300FPS in glxgears.

Update 23.11.08: I found a work-around for the suspend to RAM problem. It now works but causes minor problems with CPU frequency scaling. Here is my report.

Update 21.11.08: Very poor graphics performance in Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex 8.10. It seems there are still problems with the graphic driver xserver-xorg-video-intel. Glxgears performs 1300FPS in Hardy Heron and only 400FPS in Intrepid Ibex. Youtube videos in full screen are not fluent, in Windows they are perfectly fine.

On October 21st 2008 I got my brand new Dell Latitude E6400 Notebook. Main aspect for me was full Linux support. If possible right out-of-the-box. I am continuously adding my new findings to this report, so stay tuned.

Specification

  • Dell Latitude E6400
  • Intel Core 2 Duo P9500 (2.53GHz, 1066MHz, 6MB)
  • 14.1in Widescreen WXGA+ (1440X900) with LED backlit, non-glare
  • Express Card base: Mobile Intel Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD
  • Integrated 0.3 Mega Pixel Camera with Microphone
  • Memory: 4096MB (2x2048) 800MHz DDR2 Dual Channel
  • Hard Drive: 250GB (7200RPM) Free Fall Sensor (Western Digital WD2500BJKT)
  • 8X DVD+/-RW Drive
  • Battery: Primary 9-cell 85W/HR LI-ION
  • Intel WiFi Link 5300 (802.11 a/b/g/n 3X3) 1/2 MiniCard
  • Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth
  • Internal German Qwertz Backlight Keyboard
  • German Windows Vista Home Basic SP1 (32Bit OS)

As distribution I use Ubuntu Linux. As the machine uses the newest Intel Centrino 2 technology, I have to use Linux Kernel 2.6.27, that means Ubuntu 8.10.

After downloading Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Release Candidate I put it on a USB stick using usb-creator. I could boot from the stick as from a CD.

Hardware

  • Grafic: 1440x900 was autodetected and 3D effects using Compiz are working right away. The brightness of the display is excellent, so working in the garden is no problem.
  • Sound: Out-of-the-box.
  • CPU: Automatic frequency scaling works.
  • WLAN: Network Manager detected my encrypted network, I only had to type my password and was online.
  • Bluetooth: Filetransfer to my Nokia 6234 without problems using Bluetooth-Manager.
  • Backlit keyboard works.
  • Light sensor to activate backlit keyboard automatically works.
  • Special keys for volume control work.
  • Webcam: Works with the application cheese (sudo apt-get install cheese) out-of-the-box.
  • Automatic control of the screen backlight using light sensor: Out-of-the-box.
  • Suspend to RAM works with the actual Kernel upgrade.
  • Suspend to Disk (Hibernate) does not work.
  • Changing to text console works with actual Kernel upgrade.
  • USB ports work.
  • DVD burner works.
  • SD Reader: Cannot test as I have no card. Comments in my blog suggest it works just fine.
  • eSATA: A guest comments that eSATA works just fine, thanks.
  • UMTS: I do not know.
  • 9 cell battery: It seems to last for ever. No chance to sit long enough in front of the computer to tell you how long.
  • Ethernet: Works. I had to activate and deactivate the network in network-manager to get the connection. The kernel module is btw. the much feared Intel e1000e Treiber.
  • System suddenly frozen: After some days using the computer it suddenly frozen. Caps and Scroll-Lock were blinking.
  • Docking station: I do not have one.
  • Very poor graphics performance: It seems there are still problems with the graphic driver xserver-xorg-video-intel. Glxgears performs 1300FPS in Hardy Heron and only 400FPS in Intrepid Ibex. Youtube videos in full screen are not fluent, in Windows they are perfectly fine.

glxgears

In Hardy the same system performs 1300FPS. It seems there are still issues with the Intel driver or Xorg.

CPU Settings at Ondemand:

  • Around 225 FPS with Visual Effects to Extra.
  • Around 340 FPS Compiz turned off or Visual Effects to normal.

CPU Settings at Performance:

  • Around 408 FPS with Visual Effects at Extra.
  • Around 415 FPS with Compiz turned off or Visual Effects to normal.

As comparison, in Fedora Core 10 Live I get above 1300FPS.

Google Earth 4.3

It can only be used with Compiz turned off. Otherwise display is distorted heavily. Without Compiz some letters of town names are missing.

Supertux2

Supertux at full resolution gives exactly 68 FPS most of the time. This seems to be an upper limit.
Starting parameters: supertux2 -g 1440x900 -a 16:10 --show-fps

trackpoint problems

Touchpad works fine on Fedora 11, but trackpoint does not.
X does not higlight nor reponds to clicks when pointer was moved using the
trackpoint., but it does when using the touchpad.
System may hang when using trackpoint, needing a reboot.

Microphone does not work

Hi,

unfortunately the microphone does not work. Do you have any hints for this big problem (no voice over ip ...)?

eSATA

I just want to confirm that eSATA works just fine. I have checked it with several HDDs and had no problems. Btw - great rerport :)
Thanks man.

Fan regulation

Hi,

finally I got my own E6400 running Ubuntu 8.10 with similar specifications as noted above. It's truly working out of the box without any trouble - despite the fan running at low levels all the time. Does one of you have the same problem? I read some newsgroups before and found hints like
- firmware upgrade: got A11 already, not possible.
- dellfand: made it even worse with the fan speeding up periodically every some seconds

Best regards.
Brian

I reported this issue to

I reported this issue to Dell. They are right now working on a BIOS patch to fix this. Should be available with BIOS revision A15. At least I hope so.

kedmond

I have a port-replicator for the E6400, and it works fine. The only problem is that the laptop's speakers do not turn off when external speakers are plugged into the dock. It works properly in Windows.

Other than that, it works fine with the dock. It even detects the external display, which works ideally with Xinerama turned on.

Alternative graphics chips

Hello, I just got a dell Latitude E6400 yesterday and the lspci-output is different from the output given on this blog. In particular, lspci tells me the system has an nVidia-chip:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Device 06eb (rev a1)

The graphics does not appear to be entirely supported by default. The default installation of intreprid does not give any xv-graphics acceleration (hence really slow graphics):

root@markov:~# xvinfo
X-Video Extension version 2.2
screen #0
no adaptors present

Any take on a resolution of that?

Cheers, jarl

NVidia

Yes, you can order the Dell Notebooks either with Intel or NVidia graphics. To enable 3D acceleration try using the Hardware Tool in the System menu, sorry - I forgot the exact name.

NVidia

Thanks a lot! Acceleration now works.

For reference for others:

The menu-item is in my kubuntu menu:
Applications -> Settings -> Hardware drivers

The nvidia chip is automatically detected and by selecting "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version 117)" and clicking "activate" the proprietary driver is (after a couple of minutes) downloaded and installed.

Also note that even though the driver says "3D-accelerated graphics", it is not only for 3D graphics. I could not watch DVDs without it.

switching to console

intelfb framebuffer drivers in the kernel seems to have problems with X4500 cards.
Try to set video=vesafb on the kernel boot line (in /boot/grub/menu.lst and all will work fine.
I suppose none should need 2d acceleration features on the console...
Hope that future versions of the kernel will fix this.

Touchpad?

Have you had problems with the touchpad? On my e6400 running ubuntu 8.10 it has been very problematic.
See for example http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1026820

Touchpad

Yes, using touchpad and trackpoint at the same time (can happen by accident) is very problematic. The mouse pointer seems to jump around randomly.

Video performance

Any solutions/workarounds for the poor video performance, can we roll back to an older driver?

64bit

Are you running on 32 or 64bit version of ubuntu 8.10? Some people reported difficulties with 4GB RAM in 32bit...

Thanks
Brian

Memory

I am running 32bit. And you are right, I think not all my memory is detected:

> cat /proc/meminfo
Mem: 3583476k total
...

But as this is still 7 times more RAM I ever had I am still very satisfied ;-)

sd card reader work

sd card reader work perfectly

System peripheral: Ricoh Co Ltd R5C843 MMC Host Controller

Have you had any experience with running a WLAN (non memory) card on the interface?

ubuntu 8.10 final version works very well.

i have bought dell latitude e5500 just 1 week. yesterday i downloaded the ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex final version and installed on this new machine. Every thing works out of box, and Suspend to RAM also works with the function key Fn + F1 so great, that i didn't expected. It's really a big surprise! It is so easy, even much easier than the Windows installation on latitude e5500, then i did not need to install any extra driver for the special components, e.g. alps touchpad was automatically configured scrolling function with the live test. It's fantastic!!!! so i think that the final version of Intrepid Ibex should work with all latitude e-series laptops without any problem, and dell needn't to release some special dell version for this e-series any more.

Suspend

Suspend worked totally fine here as well. But after around 20 or more suspends it stopped working. I even freshly installed the release candidate but still it freezes. Maybe I try some more times...

suspend freezes after i tested hibernate

yes, i got the same phenomenon. first worked SUSPEND out of the box without any problem, until some time later i tried the HIBERNATE function then SUSPEND and HIBERNATE both friezed the laptop.

Suspend

Yes, I just tried to suspend two more times, both failed. Then I copied the final of 8.10 to an USB stick using usb-creator. Booting from this live system allowed me to suspend all 3 times I tried it without problems.
